Sampler Tree

Website: www.rainbowgallery.com
Fabric: 28 ct. evenweave   Color: khaki
Floss: DMC, over 2
Started: 12 Sep 2009
Finished: 13 Sep 2009
Size: @ 1¼" x 4 58"
Goofs: yes, not design-impairing; miscounted on a couple rows, not too blatantly obvious
Purpose: Christmas ornament
Notes/Modifications: I refused to buy the RG threads when I have a ton of DMC, so I matched up my own colors. I used:
  • DMC 498 for the red
  • Section A is 319
  • Section B is 501 with the Rhodes stitches in 319 and I also reversed my stitches
  • Section C is 502 for the lighter green, 936 for the darker and reversed the stitch on one of them
  • Section D is 502 and the vertical tied crosses are 367, and I also did some reverse stitching on alternating lines of 502
  • Section E is 3362, and the broad crosses are 895; the brown is 3031.

Design: Quarters
Designer/Source: Celtic Art in Cross Stitch by Barbara Hammet

Floss: DMC
Started: 13 Jun 2009

Size: @ 7¾" square
Goofs: none, Celtic stitching isn't very forgiving
Purpose: gift as requested I make her something using one of the designs within this book since she gifted it to me. =)
Notes: changed out most of the colors because they look kinda blah, and wanted bolder colors. I only kept black and the colors in the animal's heads. And tried to choose the four knot colors to reflect the four seasons.

"The iron tongue of midnight hath told twelve; Lovers to bed; 'tis almost fairy time." ~ William Shakespeare

Design: Fairy Queene (Queen Maeve)
Designer/Source: Magical Cross-Stitch book
Website: www.amazon.com
Fabric: 18 ct. Aida
Floss: DMC, chart-indicated
Started: 09 Feb 2009
Finished: 04 May 2009
Size: 5¾" x 13" (fits in standard 11" x 22" size frame)
Goofs: one, but totally unnoticeable.
Purpose: decorative/gift
Notes: } Called for Mill Hill beads along the near-bottom of her skirt, bodice and crown; instead of having a multitude of beads left over I'd never use, I substituted the beads with a blend of 1 strand each of DMC Rayons 30762R and 30211R (cream and lavender). Gives the shiny for less time and frustration of the beads, LOL.

} Called for DMC Light Effects E5272 blended with 3865 and 415, which I didn't have/couldn't find, so I used Kreinik 001 10M #8 silver; but I misjudged the size of the Kreinik (too big) and it didn't blend very well for the wings or stars, so for the wings, I used the silver for my bottom stitches and the regular DMC colors for my top and the stars in just the silver.

} Can't believe the luck in finding a mat that matches one of the dark blue floss colors thisclose. Woot!

Pattern Notes: There are two places where the back-stitching lines did not get printed, so if you do this pattern, refer to the finished picture in the book as well. There are BS's missing on her legs and the right-side sleeve. And on the second page the 10-count gridlines are mucked up on the right. I don't know if these types of errors occur on other patterns in the book.

Floss: DMC, chart-indicated
Started: 05 Feb 2009

Goofs: none; though the light green on the leaves blends very closely with the silvery aida.
Purpose: bookmark
Notes: Mom got this from a co-worker who went to Scotland and didn't realize it wasn't a finished bookmark until after she bought it. LOL Plenty of floss provided (might be enough for two, or very close to it); however wish they had distinguished the colors somehow other than "bright purple" and on a card.

Finished: 18 Jan 2009
Size: 3" x 5 58"

Design: Shimmering Mermaid
Designer/Source: Nora Corbett/Mirabilia
Website: www.mirabilia.com
Fabric: 32 ct. Lugana   Color: ?? a sort of medium teal, more green than blue
Floss: DMC, chart-indicated, over 2
Started: sometime in 2006; had looong stretches of no progress
Finished: 11 Jan 2009
Size: chart-indicated
Goofs: yes, at least two that I remember, not design-impairing; one stands out more than the other. Doh.
Purpose: decorative
Notes: The compass was a pain while using transparent thread, then I wised up and switched to a thread practically the same color as the fabric. I think trans. thread would not be as much of a pain on darker shaded fabric; unless I was in spots like her hair/fin/body where there weren't expanses of no other stitches, it was hard to keep track of where I'd beaded with the trans thread.
